3 Tips For Using Twitter To Connect With Customers

Social media is all about relationship building, connecting with both current and potential customers.

1. Lists

I feel like I preach lists constantly, but Twitter listsare still the easiest way to stay in touch with your customers.

By placing your customers on a Twitter list (even a private list) you can engage with them regularly and stay front of mind for them. And because you’re engaging with them on Twitter regularly, they also know you’ll be there and available if they run into any problems and need you.

Use a tool like Hootsuite to create a stream of content using the list so you can quickly see who among your clients is posting to Twitter. Retweet, favorite and comment on their content. Show some love. Trust me, it will only encourage them to remain loyal customers.

2. Allow direct messages from anyone.

You may or may not know this, but Twitter updated its platform a few months ago to allow users to opt in to receiving messages from anyone on Twitter. While the feature may seem trivial, it’s another small tweak in Twitter’s recent attempts to have users just plain message each other more, and in turn, boost engagement — particularly among brands and businesses.

Direct messages are a great way to build relationships with others on Twitter.

If you’re putting out great content (and especially if you’reusing Social Quant to build a large, targeted following), chances are you’re going to have people who want to reach out to you who you aren’t following you, possibly potential customers. By prohibiting people you aren’t following from contacting you, you might be missing out on some new business opportunities.

Also, if you are using either of the live-streaming video apps, Periscope or Meerkat, chances are you’ll be encountering a whole new set of users. One of the easiest ways to further communicate with these people is to encourage them to reach out to you through using Twitter.

To update your Twitter account to receive direct messages from anyone, you just need to go to your Twitter settings and then click on the Security and privacy tab. At the very bottom of that page you’ll see the opt-in box to receive direct messages from anyone.

3. Use a reputation monitoring tool.

There are a ton of options out there, from Mention toBrand24.

Using a reputation monitoring tool makes it easy for you to be quickly alerted if any of your customers mention your brand on Twitter (or anywhere else on social media, for that matter).

If you have an active customer base using Twitter, you definitely want to add reputation monitoring to your list of must-do’s.

Final Thoughts

I hate to say it, but the truth is that social media can make or break relationships with customers.

No one expects a company to be perfect, but if they are responsive and accountable in the event that something does go wrong, they often can earn loyal customers in spite of problems.

Hopefully these simple tips will make staying in touch with and responding to your current customers a little easier… and earn you a few more loyal customers in the process.
